Compassionate Hands and Hearts
Breast Cancer
Outreach

On Friday, June 23, 2017 at an awards luncheon at the Embassy Suites in
Kissimmee , The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA), presented a check
to Compassionate Hands and Hearts Breast Cancer Outreach. The check was
presented to Melissa Chappell and Evadne Gannarelli , Representatives
of Compassionate Hands and Hearts Breast Cancer Outreach, in the amount
of $4,200.00
The organization is made up of cancer survivors, and those who have been
affected through family and friends. These volunteers understand the
journey firsthand, they are there to help physically, mentally and
emotionally. The organization is an outreach program for women and men
that have been diagnosed with breast cancer. They play a vital role in
helping patients' journey to recovery, so, no one walks this journey alone.
Their hands and Hearts are ready to help!
WFTV Channel 9, News Anchor, Vanessa Echols organized Compassionate Hands
and Hearts Breast Cancer Outreach in 2007 to help Central Florida women and
men who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

The Order Sons of Italy in America is one of the oldest Fraternal order of
men and women throughout the United States and Canada. The Order seeks to
support those in need through our charitable and scholarship programs. This
group of dedicated men and women work continuously to raise money for
charities, and to give scholarships to deserving high school seniors.
The Florida Grand Lodge held their biannual convention at the Embassy Suites
in Kissimmee, and the Florida Grand Lodge President, a long-time resident of
St Cloud, nominated the local charity, Compassionate Hands and Hearts Breast
Cancer Outreach to receive this donation.

The members of OSIA worked tirelessly, holding many functions to raise the
money, and they graciously donated to this worthy cause.
Our cancer chairperson, Mildred Cooper, along with Grand Lodge President,
Carolyn Cianciotta , and Osceola County Lodge President, Gertrude Dorries,
presented the check at the luncheon that honored all the Presidents of the
local lodges throughout the State of Florida.

COLUMBUS DAY CELEBRATION

( submitted by Gene Laveroni)

The First Columbus Day Parade and Celebration in New York took place on October 12,1911

Mayor Wm. j Gaynor, at the Columbus Day Dinner at the Hotel Astor that evening, spoke eloquent over the troubles of Christopher Columbus:  The subject of libel and slander and why Columbus Day should be made a legal holiday. The Mayor declared that Columbus was one of the greatest men that ever lived, and worthy of every honor this country can bestow on him.

The New York Times- Front Page- Friday, October 13,1911, Mayor Gaynor's Speech

"It is true that by accident,m or at all events without design, that Columbus discovered this continent. But his great achievement was not by accident. He had brooded on it for years. It was a life study. He patiently toiled at it. I see him tonight off this remote coast patiently and calmly and silently pacing the deck of his flagship and brooding over that one subject that had occupied his mind for many many years.

He has gone about with that project here and there.it was the same as it is with men of genius now. Nobody entertained him, there were plenty to rebuff him, there were plenty to slander him, there were plenty to libel him.

But through it all we see his monumental greatness as exhibited in his patience and his perseverance.

No expression is truer in this world than that patience is the possession of great souls, and never was it better illustrated and shown than in the great soul of this man, Christopher Columbus.

This preparation we seldom get in history. His life is stated and given as though it all occurred in three months. Columbus was patient. He was toiling with his idea for years. He was getting ready.

You can't do anything in this world without getting ready. Genius consists in getting ready. To accomplish a result you have to organize the conditions. There is no other way to do it. These are the lessons that we have to learn from such events and such men.

Another reason why it is fitting that Columbus Day should be made a legal holiday is that there are so many of his countrymen in this country.

It did my heart good to see so many Italians turn out in the parade today

I am very glad to be here and now I express hope, and I am quite sure it will be so, that this celebration will be a fixed annual celebration in this city.

Columbus Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October. The day commentates October 12, 1492 when Italian navigator Christopher Columbus landed in the New World. The holiday was first proclaimed in 1937 by President Franklin D Roosevelt .
